Divorce Sucks

Why is divorce stressful?

Without a doubt, divorce is usually a crappy time in someone’s life. The person that you have vowed to love, honour and cherish has flown the coop or you have decided to part way. Either way, the one person who was at one time your lover and best friend is now suddenly the opposition.

Recent studies are always releasing stats on the measurement of stress and the factors that cause them in our life. Divorce always ranks near the top of the list, deservingly so. The following is just one of these studies. If you’re divorcing and you’re stressed to the max, this may help you validate those feelings.

Event Stress
Death of Spouse 100
Divorce 73
Marital Separation 65
Death of close family member 63
Jail term 63
Personal injury or illness 53
Marriage 50
Fired at work 47

Interestingly enough, divorce ranks higher than getting fired at work and even stranger yet, higher than serving a jail term. In fact, the only event that beats divorce in the stress department is the death of a spouse ranked at #1. Not surprising to anyone who has been through the divorce process especially a less than amicable one. One of the many frustrations about divorce is that your spouse is still out there walking around and in many cases, still dealing with you. The pain and challenges just keep you. Dodging literal bullets, placating  an irritated ex and juggling work and children just become commonplace. Not a wonder it’s ranked so high on the chart.
