Zainab, Sahar and Geeti, respectively 19, 17 and 13 were discovered in the car pulled from the water along with their father’s first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad. Charged in the murder are Mohammed Shafia, father of the three sisters. Also, arrested and charged are Tooba Mohammad Yahya, Shafia’s second wife and their 21-year-old son Hamed.
The deaths of the three were ruled as drowning as evidence arose that the father, mother and brother of the three girls were involved in what is being referred as an “honour killing”. The first wife of Shafia, who was unfortunately infertile, was also killed.
Evidence brought into testimony has the Shafia grey Lexus SUV sustaining damage that directly resembles the damage that might have been sustained while pushing the Nissan into the water. Since force was required to push the black Nissan Sentra over a lock gate; investigators have deduced that the damage to the Lexus occurred during the homicide.
The family has said that they were motivated by a desire to restore family honour brought on by their rebellious daughters and their wearing of makeup and revealing clothing as well as their desire to take boyfriends.
The jurors will be taken to the scene of the crime where they will be shown factors which will illustrate the evidence more fully.
