I love this expression; you can use it anyday, any way. It can mean just about anything. It’s a classic Italian line that’s been used in just about every movie and TV show prominently featuring Italians. Why it’s even MORE Italian than pasta!
You cheated on your wife. Fuhgeddaboudit. You stole property that didn’t belong to you and didn’t get caught. Fuhgeddaboudit. You tried to get downtown during rush hour traffic when there was an accident on the highway. Fuhgeddaboudit. That dress looks great on you. Fuhgeddaboudit.
It’s an all inclusive catch phrase that suits a whole lot of life’s situations. Few live this mentality as well as my ex and his immediate family members. It doesn’t seem to phase them one little bit that their loved one is capable of such horrendous and obvious misdeeds. They simply forget about it. There is no grievous sin that is too great for them not to turn their heads and simply look away. Better that than have to face any ramifications or consequences of his actions. Heck no! They prefer to bury their heads in the sand like a group of ostriches and pretent like anybody who would ever suggest that he’s capable of those same atrocities was stark raving mad. I’m not suggesting that this is an Italian trait, for there are many in this family who are good and worthy people. This is an inner core, the cogs in the wheel of this particular sector of the family. They’ve worked hard to cover his activities. After all…this is their golden boy; the one who has given them everything. Doesn’t matter that those gifts and that money came from ill-gotten gains or from the blood, sweat and tears of other more worthy people. These people quite literally worship this guy and will forgive him anything and everything. They will continue to hide happenings of importance from those who rightfully should be made aware. This man is congratulated by those same individuals and hailed as somewhat of a familial hero. Why? You ask me. I’m sure I don’t know. He’s slippery and sleazy; but he’s charming. It’s a deadly menage-a-trois.
He lied, cheated, stole , abused and his family insists on covering up his criminal, emotional and psychological attrocities that he’s inflicted on other people! Fuhgeddaboudit.
